The Keto Craze

Keto definitely seems to be the new buzzword around here recently. We’re seeing “Keto Chocolate”, “Keto Bowls” and “Keto Smoothies” pop up all over the place! So we’re here to tell you all about the keto craze and if it’s actually good for you!

What is Keto?

Firstly, let’s start with ‘what is keto’? The word keto comes from the word Ketosis, a normal metabolic process where your body burns fat instead of sugar. From this comes the ketogenic diet, essentially starving your body of glucose and sugars and consequently forcing your body to burn fat stores instead. Your body is fuelled by fat instead of carbs and sugar, and is now becoming the hottest trend in the weight loss industry.

The Basics

A “Keto” diet is essentially made up of:

  1. A majority of high-fat foods (like coconut, olive oil, avocados, nuts, seeds, eggs and oily fish).
  2. Medium amounts of protein.
  3. Very low amounts of carbs. Even starchy vegetables or natural sugars are out!
  4. Very low amounts of carbs. Even starchy vegetables or natural sugars are out!

Carbs are commonly known as our fuel tank and “energy food” but the keto diet is dispelling this. As carbs are not in the equation, we rely on healthy fats as energy, and they do a pretty great job of it too! High fat foods are all essential on a keto diet to make sure you get your vital nutrients, have enough energy throughout the day and feel full too.

Is Keto right for YOU?

This may sound all hunky dory, but this style of eating doesn’t work for everyone. Those who train most days and use tons of energy may find that they just can’t sustain themselves on a keto diet. We’re all about balance and diets that are maintainable. Keto diets are great to try but not necessarily sustainable for the long run. Why not start small and try adding in some keto friendly foods into your diet and give them a go? If you’re unsure, always consult with your nutritionist first!
